Took Mrs Bobmcc for a walk out by Tayport Heath this afternoon, and of course took the bins allong (just in case) We were well rewarded for our efforts on a sub-zero but beautiful sunny day.
We parked at the old pond and walked along the esplanade which gave good close views of mallard, Wigeon, Oystercatcher, Lapwing, Curlew, and mixed flocks of gulls. The birds were clustered around the outflow from a stream. The tide was miles out, but the exposed mudflats bore Dunlin, Godwit, Grey Plover, Shellduck.

A walk through the caravan site gave up Blackbird, Song thrush, Mistle thresh, Starling, Wood Pigeon, Robin and House sparrow, whilst the wee bridge over the burn held a Grey Heron and Mrs Bobmcc flushed up a Snipe right below the footbridge.

Continuing on past the old tank defences and the ruined weather station, we paused to watch a group of twenty or so Wigeon amongst the grassy tussocks, with Starling, Song Thrush and Meadow Pipit, when I noticed a different shape/colour/movement, which turned out to be another Snipe, - then another, then another. All told seven Snipe (at least) in an area smaller than a basketball court. A disturbance put up hundreds of gulls and we managed to spot the source. A Sparrowhawk overhead, which in turn was chased off by three Crows.
The walk back yeilded more of the same, but a Great Black Back Gull was defending a dead, frozen fish against all comers.

Blooming freezing, but not a bad day out?

regards, Bobmcc
