Endangered insects to be reintroduced on RSPB Scotland reserves

Insect species on the brink of extinction are to be released at RSPB Scotland's nature reserves in a bid to rejuvenate ailing populations in the UK.

In the spirit of the International Year of Biodiversity, RSPB Scotland and partners are reintroducing threatened species of moth and hoverfly to help them return to Scotland, as well as projects south of the border to bring back endangered species of cricket and bee.

In the past, RSPB Scotland has played a pivotal role in reintroducing threatened birds like white tailed eagles and red kites to help bolster populations that were either locally extinct or in danger of becoming so. It is hoped that these past successes c ...

Golden eagles to get protection boost

News that one of Scotland's most iconic birds could soon receive better protection from damaging developments and disturbance was today applauded by RSPB Scotland.

Environment minister Roseanna Cunningham has announced proposals to create six large new Special Protection Areas (SPA) for golden eagles covering more than 400,000 hectares in northern and western Scotland. Consultations on the proposals will be started by Scottish Natural Heritage in the New Year.

Arran is a special place with special birds. Birding on Arran is interesting at any time of the year. Baron’s Haugh is an important community nature reserve on the edge of Motherwell (Map Sheet 64 Grid ref : NS755548). Managed since 1983 by the RSPB (present site manager – Nick Chambers) it comprises 107.3 hectares of richly varied habitats. An Information Warden, Ben Mitchell, is now employed, his duties shared between the Reserve and the ajoining estate of Dalzell Park
